Muratec drumThe drum is one of the most critical components of any laser printer. It’s easily identified as the toner-coated, cylindrical structure that rolls over paper to impart text and images. Over time, printer drums grow old and need to be replaced. In some cases, however, you can eliminate a drum problem with a few simple cleaning techniques.

First, use a small screwdriver to remove the Muratec drum from the clips that fasten it to the printer. Locate the photosensitive roller and set it aside on a piece of paper. A second, foamy roller can be removed delicately with a cue tip. Begin the cleaning process by scrubbing the drum brush with a cue tip to remove excess toner. Leave the rollers alone unless they appear to be caked with toner. In that case, give them a few taps to loosen the debris. Simply reverse the first few steps of this procedure to reinstall the drum.
